Governor Kristi Noem Announces Plans for Special Session on Abortion

Noem Takes Aim at Roe v. Wade

Governor of South Dakota Vows to Protect Unborn Children

PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem announced plans to call a special legislative session if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

Noem made the announcement on Twitter, stating that she would “immediately call for a special session to save lives and guarantee that every unborn child has a right to life.”

Noem’s announcement comes after a draft opinion leaked from the Supreme Court indicating that the court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide.

If Roe v. Wade is overturned, states would be free to set their own abortion laws. Noem has long been a vocal opponent of abortion and has previously signed legislation that restricts access to the procedure in South Dakota.

The special session would be the first of its kind in South Dakota since 2016, when Noem’s predecessor, Dennis Daugaard, called a session to address budget cuts.

Noem’s announcement has been met with mixed reactions. Supporters of Noem’s stance on abortion have praised her for taking a stand for the unborn, while opponents have criticized her for trying to restrict women’s rights.

The Supreme Court is expected to issue its final ruling on Roe v. Wade in the coming weeks.
