International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia: A Call for Inclusion

Ending Stigma and Discrimination

On May 17th, the world observes the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). This day commemorates the repeal of the World Health Organization's classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1990.

IDAHOBIT recognizes the ongoing struggle against stigma, discrimination, and violence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals. It is a day to reaffirm our commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society.

Protection of Human Rights

UNAIDS, the United Nations agency dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS, emphasizes the importance of human rights protection for LGBTQ+ people. On IDAHOBIT, UNAIDS calls for an end to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) also recognizes the significance of IDAHOBIT. It urges governments to implement policies that promote equality and non-discrimination for all.

Celebrating Diversity

IDAHOBIT is not just a day of remembrance but also a celebration of diversity. It is an opportunity to acknowledge the valuable contributions that LGBTQ+ individuals make to our societies.

By promoting inclusion and understanding, we can create a world where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feels valued and respected.
