February 7, 2023 - A catastrophic earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria on Monday, February 6, at 04:17 TRT (01:17 UTC), causing widespread devastation and loss of life.

The epicenter of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake was located 37 kilometers (23 miles) west-northwest of Gaziantep, Turkey, at a depth of 17.9 kilometers (11 miles). According to the latest reports, over 30,000 people have been confirmed dead, and thousands more injured.

The earthquake has triggered a series of powerful aftershocks, including several with magnitudes greater than 5.0. Rescue operations are ongoing, but efforts are being hampered by widespread destruction and aftershocks.
